PBT – Polybutylene Terephthalate

PBT, Polybutylene Terephthalate, belongs to the family of polyester thermoplastics. PBT is a semi-crystalline polymer used mainly in injection moulding for engineering applications. Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) is produced by polycondensation of terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate with 1,4-butanediol.

Well known brands of PBT are Celanex®, Arnite®, Valox®, Ultradur®, Crastin® and Sicoter®.

Additionally, flame retardant Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) grades are available reaching UL94 V-0, and in some cases even 5 VA rating.

PBT is available with different melt viscosities suitable for injection moulding and extrusion. Some Polybutylene Terephthalate (PBT) grades have rapid crystallisation allowing fast cycle times.

PBT is especially suitable for engineering applications requiring high dimensional stability because Polybutylene Terephthalate has low thermal expansion coefficient and low water absorption.
